Understanding Volume versus WeightUpdated 4 months ago

Volume v/s Weight

From time-to-time, we may receive a call regarding a shortage on a fragrance oil bottle. This tends to be a recurring question throughout the year. Some people may be confused by the vast difference between weight and volume, especially when it comes to the Crafter's Choice fragrance oils and how they are packed while others may just question why the fragrance bottle is not filled to the top.

Our fragrances have diffent measurements depending on the brand.  While the Crafters Choice Brand is filled by volume; the EBB, Rustic, MYOB & Just Scent brands  are filled by weight.

  • EBB, Rustic, MYOB & Just Scent those fragrances are filled by weight but they may not be filled to the top.   It will depend on the weight of each fragrance oil.  Some fragrances are thicker and heavier while other fragrances are thinner and light.  When fragrance oils are hand packed, a scale is used to insure that the actual weight is measured correctly. Weight is actually what the fragrance oils weigh. That is why some fragrance oils come packed to the top of the bottle while others do not,  as it depends on the viscosity or thickness of each fragrance. Below are some examples of of oils filled by weight in the same size container.  The Heavier Oils.

Same weight (oz), different density=different volume (fl. oz)

  • On the other hand, Crafters Choice Fragrance bottles are measured by Volume (indicated by Fluid Ounces  on the website).  The volume of anything is not how much it weighs but how much room it takes up in its container. Many people are confused by what weight and volume mean when it comes to fragrance oils and how they are packed. Sometimes a person will order a fragrance oil and be surprised to find that it is not filled to the top of the bottle.   Crafters Choice/Wholesale Supplies Plus fragrance oil and essential oil bottles should be filled to the top of the light blue band at the top of the bottle. This makes it easy to check the fill line as soon as you receive the item so you know if your bottle was filled correctly.

Below are a few good examples, as well as differences between the two forms of measurement (volume versus weight).

Weight measures the heaviness or mass of an object: If you weigh a pound of feathers, and you weigh a pound of bricks, they are both equal to a pound.

  1. Volume measures capacity, or the amount of space that something occupies: This is used to determine fluid ounces. In the above example, If you have to package a pound of feathers in bag (A) and a pound of bricks in bag (B), the amount of space used in the bag of would look incredibly different between the two. If you can imagine stuffing a pound of feathers in the bag, you would have to use a heaping amount in order to get it to equal one pound, where the pound of bricks would take up much less room in the bag because it is heavier. Volume measurements are more suited to liquid ingredients and can easily be measured using a measuring cup.
  2. The volume example listed above is the same concept that would apply to our fragrances. Since some oils are heavier or thicker than others, they will take up more space or less space in the bottle because they all have a different density.

Note: Crafter's Choice fragrance drums are sold by weight - the 25 lb drum will include the actual weight of the drum per our manufacturer's processing policy.

Fragrance oils from Rustic Escentuals, MakeYourOwn.Buzz, Just Scent, and Elements Bath & Body are sold by weight; shelf stock/non-bulk sizes will not include the weight of the bottle.

Quick Customer Explanations

WSP

WSP fragrance/flavor/essential oils are sold by volume (fl. oz) rather than weight (oz), the oils will have different weights depending on the density of the oil (some will have more than expected, while some will have less than expected. Since the fragrance is filled by volume, the fragrance should be filled to the light blue band at the top of the bottle. You can find density information on the SDS on each product's store page (section 9). You can calculate the expected weight of any oil by using this information.

MYOB/Rustic/EBB/JS

All fragrance bottles are filled by weight.  The weight of the fragrance will vary depending on the thickness of the oil.  Did you happen to weight the bottles?

Fragrance Bottles

WSP & MYOB

WSP & MYOB Fragrances are packed in amber glass bottles.   The Amber bottle provides UV ray protection for light sensitive liquids.  These brands are packed in glass bottles, since packing these fragrance brands in plastic can cause the product to degrade the bottle.

Rustic/EBB/ JS

Rustic, Elements & Just Scent fragrances are packed in clear plastic.  Fragrance may degrade plastic and cause bottles to leak at times but traditionally are okay to be packed in PET (1).  These fragrance brands  have a slightly differnt chemical make-up and are not as potent as WSP or MYOB brands and therefore can usually withstand a plastic PET (1) bottle.
