What is a Milk Bath?
A milk bath is a bath taken in milk instead of just water. Often other scents and essential oils are added as well as additives such as herbs, florals, and salts. Milk baths use lactic acid to dissolve the proteins which hold together dead skin cells. Milk Baths have many benefits, including moisturizing as well as exfoliating the skin.
Basic Ingredients
The main ingredient of course is Milk! In powdered form, it is an economical way of creating large batches which when stored properly can last for quite a while. This ingredient provides plenty of moisturizing properties as well as being a gentle exfoliate. Below you will find the many types of Milk Powder that can be used:
Other additives can be used as well to create your own unique milk bath formula. These ingredients include:
Bath Teas - Bath teas are premixed herb blends that you can purchase for your bath and body creations. You can add them to Milk Baths to provide visual variations of color and texture.
Herbs and bath teas hit the warm water and release natural oils and extracts.
Herbs and Botanicals - Herbs and botanicals are a great way to add visual variation to a Milk Bath. You can use any dry herb, but common ones include rose petals, chamomile, lavender and jasmine.
Colloidal Oatmeal - Oatmeal binds to the skin and creates a barrier that is thought to protect the skin. The hydrated granules of oatmeal adhere to the surface of the skin and provide a protective film attracting humidity and reducing friction. It has been used in Egypt since 2,000 BC for its beautifying effects. It is used for natural moisturizing properties and to alleviate itching.
Fragrance or Essential Oil - If you want your Milk Bath to have a scent, then you’ll need to add a fragrance oil or essential oil. You can add 1% essential oil or up to 2% fragrance oil. Double check IFRA guidelines to make sure you comply.
Baking Soda - Natural alkaline that neutralizes acids and washes away oils/dirt while leaving skin soft, silky & smooth. Dissolves in water.
Epsom Salts-Dissolved in a bath, Epsom Salt is absorbed through the skin to replenish the body's levels of magnesium. Researchers have found that magnesium increases energy by encouraging the production energy packets made in the cells. A great ingredient to use to help relax and soothe overworked muscles.
Salts -The various type of sea salts are full of minerals including magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium, all of which play a key role in our skin’s health, function, and cellular communication.

How to use
Using a Milk Bath recipe is so simple!
- You can pour the mixture directly into the bathwater for a luxurious soak. Stir slightly to incorporate it throughout. Keep in mind that you will need to clean the tub after you're done.
- If you don't want to deal with the hassle of clean up, you can put the mixture into a tea bag or a muslin drawstring bag and pop it into the water. The ingredients will soak into the water but stay confined in a small area. When you're done, simply remove the bag!
